THQ’s Super Hero Squad appearing at E3
With video game extravaganza E3 happening in a little over a week, various sites (like Platform Nation for one) are reporting that THQ’s Super Hero Squad video game will be shown, which only makes too much sense since the game is supposed to be released in fall 2009 so hopefully we’ll see some pictures soon! Feel free to discuss over on the board.
Annual THQ Super Hero Squad Games
Apparently THQ is thinking long-term with Marvel’s Super Hero Squad license according to IGN’s report of today’s 2009 fiscal year financial call.
Marvel Super Hero Squad to Be Annual Franchise
Get ready to whoop kid-friendly butt for years to come.

May 6, 2009 – Today in THQ’s financial call for the end of the 2009 fiscal year, executives for the company mentioned that Marvel Super Hero Squad will be made into an annual franchise if things go to plan.
Starting in the holiday season of this calendar year, we were told to expect annual installments of the franchise based on popular Marvel Super Heroes including Iron-Man, Hulk, Spider-Man and Wolverine, as well as popular villains such as Doctor Doom, Magneto and the Abomination.
Marvel Super Hero Squad is scheduled to launch in the holiday season of 2009, though no specific systems have been revealed at this time.
Super Hero Squad Game leaked early?
There’s a new rumor that copies of the Super Hero Squad game have been pirated and leaked. It’s bunk. What’s “leaked” is a copy of M.U.G.E.N., a customizable video game engine that is user friendly (well, at least as far as these things get) to the point that more technically oriented fans can “create” new characters or borrow characters from other game franchises to pit them against each other in a Marvel vs. Capcom style 2d fighting game. The individuals posting the game, however, chose to include a text block describing the concept of Super Hero Squad (lovable super-styled Marvel characters!) and in some cases calling it Super Hero Squad. While this version of M.U.G.E.N. no doubt has some great playable characters, it’s not a leak of the Super Hero Squad, nor is it actually licensed.
So long story short, the Super Hero Squad game isn’t leaked, so don’t be fooled.
Super Hero Squad: The Video Game
First news of the cartoon, now the potential for video games. Apparently THQ has locked up the rights to Super Hero Squad, the video game. Read Variety’s take on it.
The article discusses many things, including Marvel’s Super Hero Squad in relation to the Nickelodeon, Pixar and Dreamworks licenses THQ has worked on, will work on, and may potentially lose.
From the article:
“Multiyear deal gives the publisher rights to make numerous ‘Super Hero Squad’ games either independently or tied to the property’s incarnations in other media. First game is targeted for fall 2009.
‘We’re all about building big entertainment brands in the videogame space, and we think this Marvel deal is more of what we have done very well,’ THQ CEO Brian Farrell said.”
Since the message board posts I’ve read for Super Hero Squad, the Animated Series have been mostly negative, I wonder if internet fans will at least wait till we have more than a general pitch for the video games before damning SHS: The Video Game.
Of note: Once again, this article talks of Captain America, Wolverine and Iron Man as stars of the line. No mention of Spider-Man, who represents 25% of the toy line.
