Marvel’s Black Panther on DVD at last!

It’s been a long time coming, but Marvel’s Black Panther animated series is finally coming to DVD, as Marvel.com reports. Footage from the series was teased back when the Incredible Hulk came out on DVD, as we talked about in October 2008. BET’s colllaboration was the subject of a panel devoted solely to the Black Panther at NYCC as reported in January 2009. And of course we were all excited to hear that the Black Panther would finally be airing, albeit in Australia, back in January 2010, almost a full year ago.

Now we can bring this turbulent ride to a close on January 18, 2011, when “Marvel Knights Animation: Black Panther” is officially released, with such “extensive” features as:”Looking Back at Black Panther with Reginald Hudlin”, “Exclusive Music Video”, and “Trailers”

Super Hero Squad Show Season 2 Premieres on October 23

Finally, a date for the premiere of Super Hero Squad Show Season 2! Marvel Animation Age is reporting that the second season will start airing on October 23, 2010, at 6:30 in the morning. “Another Order of Evil” is the title, and as you probably already know, this upcoming season will feature newcomers to the Squad, Scarlet Witch and HERBIE, assisting the Squaddies as they tackle Thanos for control of the Infinity Stones. Computer Generated Green Lantern Cartoon, and Maybe Batman Too?

Comics Continuum is posting news that the upcoming Green Lantern animated series won’t tie into the movie and will be computer generated, as will (possibly) the Batman follow-up to Brave and the Bold. Other tidbits include: Jim Krieg is the story editor for that Green Lantern cartoon, and that Hal Jordan, Kilowog and a Red Lantern will anchor it.

Super Hero Squad Season 1 on DVD. In Canada.

Canadians were the first to get the complete Wolverine and the X-Men animated series, and now they’re the first to get the complete Super Hero Squad Season 1 which, according to TVShows on DVD will be out on September 28 for $29.98 Canadian. Dear the US: Please stop buying volume 1 through Eleventy of a series because it only encourages rights holders to release a handful of episodes on DVD at a time, and that sucks. Paul Dini Redefines Ultimate Spider-Man

Paul Dini, known and beloved for his extensive work on shows like Batman the Animated Series, is going to work on redefining Peter Parker for the upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man animated series according to MTV. The article does a nice round up of the Ultimate Spider-Man news so far, including an explanation of Man of Action’s (the Generator Rex guys) role on the series.

Here’s a quote from Dini that seems to summarize the entire interview:

You also don’t want to repeat the same old tropes. As much as I love elements of Spider-Man’s past, I don’t really want to go back in and retell the Gwen Stacy and Green Goblin story in animation just so I can do my take on it. I don’t want to redo the first Spider Slayer story. I don’t want to redo some of those classic Lee/Romita and Lee/Ditka stories just for the sake of seeing them rendered in animation. For now, I just want to approach Spider-Man with fresh eyes, taking a few things we know about him and just doing a new spin on the concept. I think old-time fans will find what we’ve done with the character to be pretty good and thoughtful, because we’re not out to junk-up Spider-Man. That’s not our intent.

Super Hero Squad Season 2 Premieres in October!

Marvel Animation Age reports that Teletoon (think of a Canadian version of Cartoon Network) has scheduled Super Hero Squad season 2 for an October premiere, and it looks like the Scarlet Witch joins the roster full time! Here’s what they have to say:

Super Hero Squad Season 2 Guest Stars

TV Guide has an article up about the upcoming Super Hero Squad Season 2, and they throw around some pretty big name checks:

- George Takei (Star Trek) – returning as Galactus
- Ty Burrell (Modern Family) – Captain Marvel
- Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) – Nightmare
- Jane Lynch (Glee) – Nebula
- Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) – She-Hulk (although we already knew that)
- Adam West (Batman) – Nighthawk.

And in addition, a string of other actors are confirmed and though their roles aren’t listed, we know that Mark Hamill played several roles in Season 1, while James Marsters was Mr. Fantastic and Kevin Sorbo was Ka-Zar. Does this mean repeat performances?

Upcoming DC Animated Black Adam, Green Lantern and Batman features

Apparently the engine of DC Direct to DVD movies continues to move forward (compare that with Marvel, whose next DVD is 2011′s Thor, Son of Asgard) with a collection of the DC Showcase short films starring the Spectre, Jonah Hex and Green Arrow, together with a new film Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam, which according to Comics Continuum will run an extended 22 minutes. That, combined with the Batman Year One film (with Comics Continuum’s later update) and Green Lantern Emerald Nights, means that DC has already matched Marvel’s direct-to-DVD effort, in less time (DC started their film offerings in 2007, Marvel in 2006) and have more in the pipeline. Hopefully Jeph Loeb will be giving DC more of a challenge.

Super Hero Squad DVD on Store Shelves 7/13/10

Marvel continues it’s countdown to the Super Hero Squad DVD release (which hits store shelves tomorrow) with an interview with Travis Willingham, the Super Hero Squad’s Hulk.

And everyone remember, the first DVD volume, in addition to containing a trailer for THQ’s Super Hero Squad Infinity Gauntlet game, contains the following episodes:

11:45-1:15 Green Lantern— Get a first look at the upcoming sci-fi action adventure Green Lantern, directed by Martin Campbell. Green Lantern is an epic adventure that crosses galaxies to bring to life the legendary Silver Age superhero Hal Jordan, who is chosen by the ring itself to become the first human member of the Green Lantern Corps and take on the vast and powerful Parallax as it threatens to destroy the world.
