Mattel Q&A April 1, 2011 – Toy Story Buddies, 3.75 inch SA Hal and more!

Toy Story fans rejoice because there will be as many as 8 all new characters in the Toy Story Buddies line this year! Head on over to the Ask Matty thread to pose your questions for the next Mattel Q&A.

1) Now that Toy Fair has come and gone, can you give us more insight into the future of the Toy Story Buddies? Other than a Dolly and a grimacing Lotsa, not a lot of new product was shown, leaving fans to wonder if the line is nearing its end and whether there will be product related to the upcoming short films.

We love the buddy segment and will be supporting it in 2011 with tons of new characters. As I am sure you know, in 2010 the line was focused exclusively on TS3 characters. In 2011 we will be introducing as many as 8 all new characters, including one of Sids toys and a Spanish Buzz! We will also be going back into the archive to pull out characters that were not available last year!

2) Will we see any other Disney or Disney/Pixar properties represented in a Buddies or Action League format?

Right now we do not have any to announce beyond the Toy Story figures from the Disney team. Stay tuned!

3) Many 3.75 inch collectors have waited patiently for DC related news only to be disappointed in the less articulated Green Lantern figures. Is there be a more collector oriented line of 3.75 DC figures, either Green Lantern or not, coming?

The collector line for GL is in the 6” scale. The 3 ¾”line is our kid line and to keep the SRP at $6.99 we had to go with kid style articulation. But we are working on trying to find a way to do at least one really great SA Hal figure in this scale down the road. Toy Guru is determined!

4) With Young Justice figures that ship with a veritable mini-playset, and Green Lantern Classics having a three-pack of smaller characters, can we expect the DCUC line to experiment with multiple smaller characters for instance, including Brain as an accessory or Gizmo or Damian Wayne as the alternative to a BAF piece?

Yes, this is something we are looking into, but nothing to confirm right now.

5) DCUC has recently unveiled the “Super Friends”, and of course Batman Beyond and the Public Enemies styling have been represented previously, so does this mean that other DC Animated styles and original characters are possibilities? For instance, characters or designs from the Teen Titans animated series, or Justice League?

We do have access to these, but right now our animated line will focus on Young Justice.

Mattel Q&A

Another day, another SDCC news round-up:

Marvelousnews has teasers about Fantastic Four airing on Nicktoons, and upcoming Wolverine and the X-Men stories, while Comic Book Resources’s Robot 6 blog features more Super Hero Squad animated series casting reveals.

In toy news, Brave and the Bold Action League story sets (such as one featuring Plastic Man, a pterodactyl and Batman) are coming, the Super Friends line gets a Green Lantern. Eclipso gets a Justice League Unlimited figure.

Finally, Infinite Heroes news includes a black costume Mary Marvel, Wildstorm Armageddon style Captain Atom and Firestorm, Robin and Renegade Nightwing, Parralax and Sinestro Corps Sinestro (and John Stewart for good measure), Booster Gold and Maxwell Lord coming in a Wal-Mart exclusive 6-pack featuring Wonder Woman, Superman and some OMACs, followed by a Death of Superman related set with Bloodwynd, Fire, Ice, Doomsday, battle-damaged Superman, and Warrior era Guy Gardner.

Not to be outdone, Target has exclusive 3 3/4 Public Enemies related figures in both 3 and 6 packs. A three pack featuring Batman, Black Lightning and Captain Atom, another with Power Girl, Superman and battle armor Lex Luthor, a 6-pack featuring Grodd, President Lex Luthor, Superman, Hawkman, Batman and Major Force. Pictures here.

Unrelated but fun, check out the Mego inspired World’s Greatest Heroes and Comics Continuum brings a run down of the upcoming Blammoids.

Not to be outdone, Marvel Universe shows up with modern Thor, Luke Cage and a new Iron Man, World War 2 uniformed Captain America and Bucky, and Black Widow. And can someone confirm that Carnage and Tarantula are in the new 3.75 inch Marvel line?

So we’ll continue trying to wade through all this information, but in the meantime, feel free to browse previous SDCC reveals at the wiki and of course, discuss SDCC 2009 on the message board.

Hawkman: Menace to Society

February 13th, 2009 Comments Off Posted in DC Super Friends

Cool Toy Review has a Mattel Q&A explaining (rather candidly I might add) what happened to Hawkman and why he’s so hard to find.

Cool Toy Review: What is the final word on Super Friends Hawkman and the rest of the line including Robin & the Joker? Cyborg has starting appearing at Targets in new packaging. But, on the the back of the package it says Hawkman is cancelled. Also, Cyborg & Hawkman are now appearing at Rite-Aids stores in limited supply in the old packaging.

Mattel: The US actually made a change to toy safety laws in 2009 which made Hawkman off limits in 2009 due to the shape of his mace (being similar to a lollypop). That is why he had to be removed from the 2009 shipments. The figures you are seeing in Rite Aides are the 2008 release which was shipped before the new law went into effect. We hope this clears it up. If there is enough retail interest in late 2009 and going forward to continue the Superfriends line in 6” scale we will look into releasing Hawkman without his mace or with a different weapon.

So congratulations on Mattel for being so straightforward, and for giving us an excuse to drag out the old The Line is Doomed tag.
